Filing a trademark abroad
In order to obtain a trade mark protection abroad, there is the possibility of registering an EU trade mark at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). A registered EU trade mark grants its proprietor a protection in all member states of the European Union.n.
There is also the possibility to apply for an international trademark, which is a central registration within the scope of the Madrid system and offers a bundle of intellectual property rights in the respective designated states (possible selection). The list of member states of the Madrid system can be found at this link. The prerequisite for this is a national basic mark or its already registered application at the Austrian Patent Office or a basic EUTM or its already registered application at the EUIPO. Currently, more than 100 countries belong to the Madrid system.
