In order to obtain a trade mark protection abroad, there is the possibility of registering an EU trade mark at the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). A registered EU trade mark grants its proprietor a protection in all member states of the European Union.n.

There is also the possibility to apply for an international trademark, which is a central registration within the scope of the Madrid system and offers a bundle of intellectual property rights in the respective designated states (possible selection). The prerequisite for this is a national basic mark or its already registered application at the Austrian Patent Office or a basic EUTM or its already registered application at the EUIPO. Currently, more than 100 countries belong to the Madrid system.
